Het bisdom van Norwich is een kerkelijk rechtsgebied of bisdom van de Kerk van Engeland dat deel uitmaakt van de provincie Canterbury in Engeland .

Geschiedenis

Het vindt zijn wortels in een ononderbroken lijn naar het bisdom van de bisschop van de East Angles, gesticht in 630. Net als veel Angelsaksische bisdommen verhuisde het, in dit geval naar Elmham in 673. Na de Normandische invasie verhuisde het naar Thetford in 1070 verhuisde uiteindelijk naar Norwich in 1094.

Het beslaat 573 parochies met 656 kerken die het hele graafschap Norfolk beslaan, behalve het uiterste westen voorbij de rivier de Great Ouse, dat deel uitmaakt van het bisdom Ely . Het omvat het decanaat van Lothingland (de haven van Lowestoft en het directe achterland) in het graafschap Suffolk . Dit komt neer op een gebied van meer dan 4.700 vierkante mijl (4.700 km 2 ) met een bevolking (2008) van zo'n 867.000.

Zoals de meeste oudere bisdommen is het grondgebied geleidelijk verkleind. Tot de vorming van het bisdom van St. Edmundsbury en Ipswich in 1914, werd Suffolk opgenomen, en eerder andere gebieden.

Organisatie

Bisschoppen

De bisschop van Norwich ( Graham Usher ) [1] leidt het bisdom en wordt bijgestaan ​​door twee wijbisschoppen, de bisschop van Thetford ( Alan Winton ) en de bisschop van Lynn ( Jane Steen ). De suffragane zetels van Ipswich en van Thetford werden beide gecreëerd door de Suffragan Bishops Act 1534, maar werden opgeschort na één zittende; Thetford werd vervolgens gedempt in 1894 en Ipswich in 1899. De zetel van Ipswich is opgeschort sinds voordat de diocesane zetel inclusief de naam van die stad werd gecreëerd; daarom werd in 1963 een nieuwe tweede suffragane zetel – van Lynn – opgericht.

Alternatief bisschoppelijk toezicht (voor parochies in het bisdom die de wijding van vrouwen tot priester niet accepteren) wordt geleverd door de provinciale bisschoppelijke bezoeker , Norman Banks , bisschop suffragan van Richborough , die een vergunning heeft als ere-assistent-bisschop van het bisdom om zijn ministerie. Er zijn ook zeven gepensioneerde bisschoppen in het bisdom die een vergunning hebben als ere-assistent-bisschoppen :

Aartsdiakenen en dekenaten

De voormalige decanaten van Ingworth en Sparham werden in 2018 samengevoegd. [9] De decanaten van St Benet in Waxham en Tunstead werden in 1996 samengevoegd. Het decanaat van Hingham en Mitford werd in 1995 opgesplitst tussen de decanaten van Dereham en Humbleyard.
