Usage

This {{WikiProject United States}} project banner template should be added (not subst:ed) to the talk page of articles within the scope of the project. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner. This template automatically adds articles to Category:WikiProject United States articles. The full syntax is as follows and § Aliases are listed below:

Instructions

General parameters

• class – valid values are listed in the custom class mask. See the project's quality scale for details.
• importance – valid values are: top, high, mid, low, na (case-insensitive). See the project's importance scale for details.
• attention – set |attention=yes if the article needs immediate attention from experienced editors. Use only if another parameter does not cover the need for attention; this should be used sparingly. It is strongly encouraged to also add a section to the talk page explaining what needs attention.
  • This parameter populates Category:United States articles needing attention.
• needs-geocoord – set |needs-geocoord=yes if the article needs geocoordinate data.
  • This parameter populates Category:United States articles missing geocoordinate data.
• needs-image – set |needs-image=yes if the article needs an image or photograph.
  • This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in the United States.
  • image-details – (appears only if |needs-image=yes) Additional details to describe the image that is requested.
  • image-in – Used in conjunction with the |needs-image=yes parameter to place the image request into a specific location, such as in the state, city or county in the United States. For example, "image-in=New York City" will place the article talk page into Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New York City. Leave blank or delete, if not.
  • Additional image-in2 and image-in3 parameters used in conjunction with the |needs-image=yes parameter may be used to specify up to three total location categories (such as for celebrities and other people who may frequent multiple county locations).
• needs-infobox – set |needs-infobox=yes if the article needs an infobox. Remember that infoboxes are not suitable for all articles, and can overwhelm short articles.
  • This parameter populates Category:United States articles needing infoboxes.
• needs-map – set |needs-map=yes if the article needs a map.
  • This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested maps in the United States.
  • map-details – (appears only if |needs-map=yes) Additional details to specify the kind of map information that is needed.
  • map-in – Used in conjunction with the |needs-map=yes parameter to place the image request into a specific location, such as in the state, city or county in the United States. For example, "map-in=New York City" will place the article talk page into Category:Wikipedia requested maps in New York City. Leave blank or delete, if not.
  • Additional map-in2 and map-in3 parameters used in conjunction with the |needs-map=yes parameter may be used to specify up to three total location categories (such as for celebrities and other people who may frequent multiple county locations).

• past-collaboration – set |past-collaboration=yes (or any non-blank value other than "no", "n", "0" or "¬", such as the dates it was part of the collaboration) if the page was a past project collaboration.
  • This parameter populates Category:Past U.S. collaborations of the Month.
• unref – set |unref=yes if the article needs inline citations and references.
  • This parameter populates Category:Unreferenced United States articles.
• auto – This parameter is for the use of bots and indicates that the article has been automatically rated:
  • |auto=length – based on the length of the article
  • |auto=inherit – because one or more other projects use this class
  • |auto=yes (or |auto=stub), in conjunction with |class=stub – as Stub-Class because it uses a stub template
    • Use of the above values (or value combinations) with this parameter populates Category:Automatically assessed United States articles.
• category – set |category=no if, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.
• listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of the DEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for Abraham Lincoln, use |listas=Lincoln, Abraham so that the talk page will show up in the L's and not the A's of the various assessment and administrative categories; similarly, for topics with titles beginning with an article such as "the" or "a" - e.g. for The Yards (Washington, D.C.), use |listas=Yards (Washington, D.C.), The so that the talk page will show up in the Y's). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter. For more information about this, please see Wikipedia:Categorization of people § Ordering names in a category.
  It is not required if another WikiProject template on the same page has its own |listas= set, since it not only affects categories used by the banner in which it is set, but it also affects the sortkey of all other banners and templates.

• Listings being with "The"; e.g. The 13th Regional Corporation, would be listas=13th Regional Corporation, The.
• Listings being with "List of", would be listas=Bridges in the United States, List of and listas=Botanical gardens in the United States, List of.
• Proper names; e.g. George Washington, would be listas=Washington, George

Portals

• portalX-name – if the article has been selected for use on a portal, the name of that portal. The name should be given without any formatting or namespace prefixes; thus, Portal:United States is given as |portal1-name=United States. Up to five different portals may be specified, via the parameters portal1-name through portal5-name.
• portalX-link – the portal subpage location where the article may be found on the corresponding portal. This should be given as a pure unlinked subpage name; thus, Portal:United States/Selected article/21 is given as |portal1-link=Selected article/21.
